Punakha Dromchoe Festival commemorates the success of the Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel who unified Bhutan as a nation state. During the 17th century, Bhutan was attacked several times by Tibetan forces in an attempt to recover a very precious relic, the Ranjung Kharsapani, which Zhabdrung brought along with him in 1616 AD. Zhabdrung was victorious over the Tibetans each time and to commemorate the victory he introduced the Punakha Dromchoe. Since then Punakha Dromchoe became the annual festival of Punakha. During the festival, the ‘pazaps’ or local militiamen, dress in traditional battle gear and reenact the ancient battle scene.
